After escaping from prison, Glenn Griffin, his brother Hal, and a third inmate, Sam Kobish, randomly choose a house in an affluent suburb of Indianapolis to hide out. The house belongs to the Hilliard family, Dan and Ellie, who live there with their daughter Cindy, 19, and their young son Ralph. They only want tostay until midnight because Griffin is waiting for his girlfriend to come to them with the money he hid. When she doesn't arrive, her stay is extended todays. Dan Hilliard plays their game because he knows his family could get caught in the crossfire if he tries to contact the police.
