George Eastman, the impoverished nephew of wealthy industrialist Charles Eastman, takes a job at his uncle's factory. Despite family ties to the owner, the wealthy Eastman family treats George like an outsider and gives him the most menial jobs in a factory, keeping him out of their exclusive social circle. Without complaining, George hopes to meet his uncle – whom he calls “Mr. Eastman” – to impress with his hard work and get promoted. While working ata factory, George begins dating Alice "Al" Tripp, an employee of Factory, violating workplace rules.Al is a poor, inexperienced girl who is confused by George and comes to believe that his Eastman name is of no use to him. While dating Al, George meets the "high society girl" Angela Vickers, played by her, and they immediately fall in love because as Angela's date, George immerseshimself in the heady, carefree high society lifestyle that is his rich parents in Eastman reject him.
