On a caravan trip through Sweden, one of the members of the decadent Alberti Circus tells the owner and presenter Albert Johansson the sad story of the clown Frost: Seven years ago, his wife Alma was surprised when he was bathing naked in a lake with the regiment. . When the circus arrives in the town where Albert's wife Agda and their children live, Albert decides with his young lover Anna to visit the famous local troupe to borrow capes, hats and vests for their evening show. They are humiliated by the director Mr. Sjuberg, but he borrows the songs and the main actor Frans gives them to Anne without success. When Albert decides to visit Agda, the jealous Anna meets Frans, who seduces her with a seemingly precious necklace, and a love story beginsbetween them.Anne realizes that the necklace is actually worthless and returns to the circus. Meanwhile, Agda refuses to bring Albert back and sees Anna leaving the theater and heading to the jewelry store. During the exhibition, Albert and Anna are humiliated by Frans.
