After a four-year absence, Detective Nick Charles returns to New York with his new wife Nora and their dog Asta. Nick reunites with many of his old friends, many of whom are eccentric characters to say the least. He is also approached by Dorothy Wynant, whose inventor father Clyde Wynant is suspected of killing her stepmother. Her father had left on a planned trip a few months earlier and she had no contact with him. Nick isn't particularly interested in returning to his old job at, but with the encouragement of his wife Nora, who finds it all very exciting, he agrees to help.He solves the case by revealing the identity of the murderer at a party where all the suspects gather.
