Umberto Ferrari, a state pensioner, takes part in a street protest organized by other pensioners. The police disperse the crowd and Unberto returns to his shabby room, which he shares with his dog Flick. Umberto's lonely friend is Maria, a housekeeper at the boarding house. She is a simple girl who is impregnated by one of the two soldiers, neither of whom admits to being the father. When Umberto's landlady Antonia demands the rent owed to him and threatens to evict him if he doesn't pay, Umbertodesperately tries to raise money by selling his books and watches.He is too proud to beg on the streets and cannot get a loan from any of his friends. He develops a sore throat and is hospitalized, delaying his financial difficulties.When he leaves the hospital, he discovers that his dog is missing and, after a frantic search, finds him in the city animal shelter. His room is occupied by the landlady and Unberto, a homeless man, decides to find a place for his beloved dog and then commits suicide. He unsuccessfully decides that his dog must die with him in the yearand stands on the train tracks, holding the dog in his arms.
