Robert and Katherine Thorn seem to have it all. He is the United States Ambassador to Italy, and there is nothing missing from their lives except one thing: they have no children. When Katharine gives birth to a stillborn baby, Robert is approached by a hospital priest who offers to take in a healthy newborn whose mother has just died in childbirth. He accepts without telling his wife, but after moving to London, strange events - and dire warnings from a priest - lead him to believe that theth child he has taken from an Italian hospital is the embodiment of evil.
