This version of Henry Devere Stackpoole's 1980 novel The Blue Lagoon was the first to receive an R rating. The basic plot remains unchanged. Two very young children, a boy and a girl, are shipwrecked on a lush tropical island. Another survivor, Leo McKern, looks after her. When he dies, the children,playing in the minimalist clothing of Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins, have no one but themselves.As they grow up, they also fall madly in love. The main feature of The Blue Lagoon is Nestor Almendros' lush cinematography,which was heavily recast and reworked before release. The sequel, “Return to the Blue Lagoon,” was released in 1990.
