CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST has been reviled for years as one of the most disgusting and morally questionable cannibalism films of the 1970s - andperhaps the most frightening of all time. However, director Ruggero Deodato embarked on this project with the intention of criticizing the violence it depicts. Set in the Amazon jungle, the film is a pseudo-documentary in which Professor Harold Moore travels to the “Green Hell” insearch of a documentary film crew that arrived in the jungle into make a film about the famous cannibals. who lived there and never came back. Now Moore meets the natives and discovers the footage of the crew's expedition. After returning to New York, he looks at them to find out what really happened. The truth is too terrible to describe, proving that cruelty is not limited to indigenous peoples, and the morally outrageous film continues to expose the exploitative practices of some documentary filmmaking practices.However, the extreme violence depicted was enough to bring Deodato into trouble with the law and censors, who claimed thedepiction was too realistic. The career of a promising director who worked with a number of Italian greats, including Roberto Rossellini (ROMA: CITTÀAPERTA, PAISAN, VIAGGIO IN ITALIA), ended with an essentially brutal and innovative film for which we will always remember him. .
