John Merrick is a horribly deformed human who earned the nickname"Elephant Man" during his years in a circus show in Victorian England. After years of suffering at the hands of his circus master, the eloquent and gentle Merrick is rescued by a compassionate surgeon, Dr. Frederick Treves, “rescued,” allowing him to live in the hospital where he works. Merrick becomes a social star when he meets a famous stage performer, but must continue to fight for his dignity against those who still consider him a monster.
