Navin Johnson, a not-so-bright white boy raised in a family of black sharecroppers, somehow manages to reach adulthood without learning that he was adopted. On his birthday, his parents finally tell him the truth and, shocked by this news, he decides to go to the big city to seek his fortune. Although he begins his odyssey with the optimism of a Candide, Navin soon finds himself confronted with a cruel world as his crazy invention - a device that prevents his glasses from slipping - takes him from rags to riches and back again. Steve Martin is cantankerous in this no-holds-barred slapstick comedy, where Bernadette Peters plays his lover. Jackie Mason, Mr.Emmet Walsh and Bill Macy are great in small roles, but the focus is always on Martin, who is at his best in a film full of hysterical gags and a dog whose name can't be pronounced on TV.
