A village priest in 19th-century England tells Durbeyfield, a simple farmer, that he comes from the famous d'Urberville family, now extinct. Or maybe not. Durbeyfield sends his daughter Tess to live with a family named d'Uberville,who live in a mansion less than a day's journey away. Alec d'Urberville is happy to meet his beautiful cousin.... and seduces her. Tess engages in a game of illusions as she finds, loses and regains her true love.
