Walter Hill's trendy and hyper-stylized action film is set in a dystopian near-future where various gangs control New York. Each gang has a unique nickname (“The Warriors,” “The Baseball Furies,” “The Rogues”) and a costume highlights their “theme”; Each person is also responsible for ageographical area. Hill presents the landscape as a vast and brutal playground full of bridges, empty subway tunnels, parks, abandoned buildings and more, all inviting exploration and adventure. At the beginning of the story, the titular Coney Island travels to the Bronx to attend a city meeting of all gangs. However, during this event, the psychotic leader of rival gang The Rogues (Dreamscape's David Patrick Kelly) kills the leader of the city's largest gang, but the Rangers are found guilty. This leads to the gang escaping through the city's labyrinth.As each Manhattan banditembarks on a fierce and deadly chase, he must also overcome every obstacle in his path. Throughout the film, Hill keeps the on-screen violence absurd, exaggerated and unrealistic, and downplays the deaths to theextreme; Nevertheless, the film sparked enormous controversy and negative reactions in the few theaters where it was originally shown for allegedly inciting violence and destruction.
