The year is 1947. Stingo (Peter MacNicol), an aspiring Southern author, travels to New York to seek his fortune. After moving into a run-down Brooklyn boarding house, Stingo befriends chemist and scientist Nathan Landau (Kevin Kline) and Nathan's girlfriend, Polish refugee Sophie Zawistowska (Oscar winner Meryl Streep). There is something disturbing about this relationship; Nathan experiences violent mood swings, while Sophie appears to be hiding a terrible secret. Stingo soon discovers that Nathan and Sophie don't know the truth; The audience is led along several garden paths through a series of sepia-toned flashbacks depicting Sophie's suffering in a wartime concentration camp. The scene where we discover the facts behind Sophie's "choice" is heartbreaking; It could have been even more powerful if the film hadn't taken so long to arrive. There's no telling that the character Sting is the alter ego of William Styron, whose best-selling novel is based on the film.
