The story is set in Indonesia during the coup attempt against President Sukarno in 1965 and Australian journalist Guy Hamilton describes the scene. Whenever Hamilton becomes too blunt or indifferent to his own well-being, he is brought back down to earth by his “conscience,” photographer Billy Kwan. As all of Jakarta descends into chaos, Hamilton begins a relationship with British diplomat Jill Bryant.
