Gabriela was based on Jorge Armado's book Gabriela, Clove and Cinammon, which was also the source of a Brazilian television soap opera. In the film, which takes place in 1925, when the book was first published, Marcello Mastrioanni plays Nacib, a bartender in the Bahian village of Parati. When drought strikes the surrounding countryside, the gentle but sexy Gabriela sets off for Parati with her friends and relatives. Nacib is immediately impressed by Gabriela's country and offers heras a cook and potential lover. Jealous of the attention Gabriela showed to local men, Nacib decided to marry her and ordered her to dress and behave carefully.
