A priest working under powerful miner Coy LaHood climbs a small mining complex and begins shooting at the scene. One of the terrorists killed Megan Wheeler's dog. As Megan buried her pet, she prayed and asked God to send someone to protect them. Afterwards, Megan sat with her widowed mother and read from the Bible: "I saw a black horse, and its rider's name was Death, and hell follows him." Later, a lone horseman dressed as a preacher rides into the camp to help the miners fight LaHood. The supernatural elements of the story are incidental and done in a subtle and nuanced way that does not distract from the story but rather enhances it, adding a new dimension to the oft-told story. Eastwood's directorial effort offered a thought-provoking, well-made Western.
