Set in the West Yorkshire town of Wetherby, the film focuses on Jean Travers, a middle-aged teacher. One evening, she invites her married friends to dinner, but is thrown into terrible pressure and panic when guest John Morgan reveals his emotional problems. The next day, a strange young man comes to Jean's cabin with the gift of a pheasant. While sitting at the kitchen table waiting for tea, he inexplicably and without warning puts the barrel of apistol into his mouth and kills himself.
