Arquette is Roberta Glass, a bored New Jersey woman who finds escape from her daily life in New York with a bohemian runaway named Susan. When Roberta goes into town for a meeting advertised by Susan and her boyfriend Jimmy, she goes crazy, loses her memory, and becomes Susan to all intents and purposes due to a case of mistaken identity. As a result, he is chased by gangsters and other suspicious people in the early eighties East Village. Quinn is a movie buff who forgets his duty to protect Roberta/Susan. Madonna, who was not yet a superstar when this movie was shot, uses this small role to showcase the kind of charisma that will soon spread throughout the world. This absurd love letter to the city of the '80s also stars Steven Wright, Giancarlo Esposito, Richard Hell, Ann Magnuson, John Lurie and Arto Lindsay.
