Over the summer, Daniel broke up with his girlfriend and told his mother that his job would require him to move to Fresno for the summer, and Daniel didn't like it. Mr. Miyagi was going to let Daniel stay with him until he received a letter from Okinawa saying that his father was dying. So Miyagi goes there and Daniel meets him. Miyagi tells Daniel that the reason he left Okinawa is because his best friend Sato, whose family is very rich in Okinawa, got engaged to Yukie, the girl Miyagi loves. Miyagi then asks him to escape with him, and Sato finds out and challenges Miyagi to fight to the death. Miyagi leaves. Once there, Miyagi discovers that Sato still wants to fight him and that his cousin and best student, Chozen, arranged it for Daniel.
