In PLATOON, Oliver Stone used his experience as an infantryman in Vietnam to show the brutality of guerrilla warfare: the heat of the jungle, the jungle and wild animals like snakes and lizards, and most of all, the presence of an invisible enemy. Charlie Sheen plays Chris, a recruiter or "fresh meat" who works as a movie announcer. At first he trembles under the harsh conditions of jungle life, freezes in conflict, and wonders if he can survive. But slowly he changes, as time goes by he begins to see the platoon split into two groups. One consists of lively, sappy and sub-intelligent whites, the other consists of blacks and heads. A tireless warrior, Sergeant Barnes is an outstanding life leader and Sgt. Elias, a free spirit, leads the last group. When the platoon suffered a tragic loss, Barnes became enraged and killed some Vietnamese and ordered their village burned, angering Elias' absence. As the conflict between these two incomes to a tragic end, Chris must decide what he values. PLATOON is perhaps one of the best war movies ever made, depicting not only America's divisions in Vietnam but also the realities of wartime: terror, separation, joy, and terrible loss.
