In the winter of 1943, Julien Quentin, a child of a pampered mother, tough with school students, but actually a kind boy who wets the bed, leaves his Parisian home at the end of the Christmas holidays. Sad to return to boarding school, Julien's classes seem uneventful until Father Jean, the principal, introduces them to three new students. One of them, Jean Bonnet, is the same age as Julien. Julien initially despises Bonnet, an aloof intellectual who is bullied by the rest of the class.
