At Nova Robotics, six new autonomous military SAINT robots, equipped with very dexterous limbs, wheels and high-powered laser units, are on display in front of the top brass. But after the demonstration, a strange lightning strikes the robot nr. 5, immersed in disorder. He accidentally escapes from the institute, after which he becomes the target of a massive manhunt led by the paranoid military. After meeting ice cream vendor Stephanie Speck and her menagerie of homeless animals, #5 becomesfilled with a burning desire to consume as much data as possible. When his creator Newton Crosby catches him, Newton realizes that lightning has made the number 5 conscious. Newton and Stephanie engage in a battle to protect the unique character of n. 5 of the army who want to capture and dismantle it.
