Kevin Costner plays idealistic federal agent Eliot Ness, whose mission to police Prohibition-era Chicago leads to violence and strange questions about law enforcement. Initially powerless to stop the influx of alcohol into the city (the police are corrupt and everyone in town seems to be in the mob's pay), Ness finds advice from a witty old cop who convinces him that he will need to break some rules. if he wants to take down the leader of the gang Al Capone. Andy Garcia and Charles MartinSmith plays Ness's other recruits, who together must face a city full of killers. Director Brian De Palma infuses the film with violence and creative camera movements, while David Mamet's clever script deftly avoids clichés at every turn. There's a sense of what's at stake for these characters on a personal level, which contrasts nicely with the futility inherent in enforcing the ban in the first place.
