A low-level "big brother" trio has an angry "little brother" who can't stay out of trouble and therefore always needs rescuing from his protector. "Big Brother" is super cute, but he has no ambitions to climb the ranks of the sorority - and once he meets and falls in love with his cousin from Kowloon, he even thinks about leaving "life".
Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai makes his feature film debut with this romantic crime drama inspired by Scorsese's Mean Streets. The film opens with young gangster Wah (Andy Lau) receiving a daytime visit from his beautiful cousin Ah-Ngor (Maggie Cheung), who arrives in Kowloon from the remote island of Lantau to receive medical treatment for her disease At first, the angry gangster and the quiet country girl don't have much in common, but gradually the two begin to form some sort of bond. Meanwhile, Wah's friend Fly (Jacky Cheung), who has an absolutely volcanic temper, always embarrasses Wah. Even though Wah knows Fly will die soon, he stands by his reckless friend. After some hesitation, Wah - who has fallen in love with Ah-Ngor - visits her cousin in Lantau, hoping that their relationship will be more than family. Fly then enrages a psychopathic mob boss, Tony (Alex Man Chi-leung), who, along with his cronies, beats and degrades Fly.and Wow. This prompts Fly to make amends with Tony by taking on the extremely difficult task of silencing an informant in police custody before the man has a chance to testify in a court hearing.
