Based on the novel by C.S. Forester from 1935. Drinking, smoking and cursing steamship captain Charlie Allnut saves the staid, sober and respectable missionary Rose Sayer, a "crazy, thin, psalm-singing old girl" after his brother is attacked by a German soldier at the beginning of the First World War. in German East Africa and dies of madness. After much deliberation, they survive a perilous journey down an African river aboard a Rattlesnake steamer, blasting rapids, battling mosquitoes and bloodthirsty leeches, and sailing to Ulonga-Bora to sabotage the German warship Louisa.
