This is a film adaptation of the work “The Tales of Hoffmann”, but it is NOT simply a film adaptation of a stage play. “Michael Powell” and Emeric Pressburger (and the rest of the “Archers”) act as usual here. The workpresents three major novels from the life of the poet-hero, presented in a series of flashbacks. Hoffmann's stories show the struggle between human love and the artist's devotion to his work. Hoffmann loses each of his beloved women, but instead gains the poetic inspiration of: the ability to transform painful experiences into art.
