James Stewart, at his warmest and most likeable, plays the frontman of a band that rose to fame during the swing era. The Glenn Miller Story may be a glossed over version of Miller's life, but it's certainly an enjoyable example of a feel-good Hollywood biopic that follows the usual conventions: early troubles,a loyal wife (June Allyson at her best) , personal sacrifices…. Miller joins the army when war breaks out, even though he doesn't have to - and that's thefinal tragedy. All of the Glenn Miller classics that make up thesoundtrack make the film fairly easy to appreciate: "Moonlight Serenade," "A String of Pearls," "Chattanooga Choo-Choo." Miller plays the wonderful “In the Mood” with his military band during an air raid in World War II. Pure corn, but it works.Director Anthony Mann, best known for his excellent series of suspenseful 1950s Westerns starring Stewart, keeps the story fluid and graceful. Louis Armstrong and Gene Krupa will play a hot jazz recording.
