John Wayne plays Sean Thornton, a retired American boxing champion who tries to put tragedy behind him by returning to Innisfree, the idyllic Irish village where he was born. He buys the house he grew up in from the current owner, angering the wealthy and belligerent Red Will Danaher (Victor McLaglen), who had plans for the property. When Thornton arrives at his cabin, he is swept away by Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O'Hara), a red-headed vision from whom he steals a not-so-unwelcome kiss.After a ruse at a horse race, some locals manage to convince an angry Red Will to let the American court his sister. But the village court ritual is just the first of many local practices that a confused Thornton must endure if he wants to get Mary Kate.
