Producer Walter Wanger, who had just been released from prison after filming a man he believed was having an affair with his wife, wanted to make a film about the horrific conditions he saw in prison. He met the director Don Siegel and together they made this film in which several prisoners organize an uprising in protest against the brutality of the guards, the inadequatenutrition, the overcrowding and the barely tolerable conditions, which most of the prisoners join and take them severalguards taken hostage. However, negotiations between prisoners and prison officials are hampered by political interference in prison administration, aswell as discord and infighting within prisoners' own ranks.
