Inspired by a 12th-century Japanese folk tale, "Sansho Dayu" describes the barbarism of a dark age when people didn't know how to be human. When a provincial governor's efforts to protect the rights of regional farmers conflict with the goals of feudal rule, he is exiled and forced to abandon his family. A few years later, his wife and children went on a long journey to find him, butwere kidnapped. The bandits sell the mother to a brothel on a remote island and the children as slaves in order to bribe the official Sansho. As the years pass, the daughter falls into passivity and the son hardens under the influence of the brutality that has happened to them.One day, as they escort a dying slave from the camp, they consider running away.
