Set in 16th century Japan, Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai depicts the plight of a defenseless farming village that lives in constant fear of marauding bandits. The farmers know that they will be attacked by bandits after the harvest. So four men go to the city in the hope of hiring samurai to fight alongside them. However, the poor villagers can only offer accommodation and a bowl of rice a day as compensation, and initially only Kambei, a brave old samurai, and his enthusiastic young apprenticeKatsushiro take up their cause. As he encountered various nomadic warriors on the streets, he slowly assembled his team of swordsmen, recruiting Shichiroji, Gorobei, Heihachi, and Kyuzo. Finally, Kikuchiyo, the scruffy traveler who follows them, completes the small group of Ronin.However, when the samurai reach the village, they find that the farmers are as afraid of them as they are of the enemy. Despite the tension, Kambei and his men gradually train the farmers to defend their village.
