Edward Dmytryk directed this sophisticated western, a remake of THE HOUSE OF STRANGERS, which in turn is loosely based on Shakespeare's KING LEAR. The tyrannical cattle baron Matt Devereaux raised his eldest sons harshly, leaving them neglected and bitter, especially Ben. However, Matt's youngest son Joe pays most of the attention to Matt's wife, a Comanche Indian. Joe remains loyal even when he is arrested for a raid on a nearby copper mine. Afterspends three years in prison, Joe returns home to find his father dead of a stroke, his mother returns with her tribe, and his brothers destroy the ranch.Joe, understandably shocked and angry, seeks revenge.
