Two long-lost friends, Fred Dobbs and Curtin, find work on a dead-end street in Tampico, Mexico. In an attempt to turn the tide, they meet Howard, an older man with a history of abundant gold that can be harvested in the nearby hills. Convinced by Howard's story, the three decide to go to the mountains to find gold and split their winnings equally. However, as elements of greed and paranoia emerge, the three men begin to fight for survival.
