Congressman Ransom Stoddard returns to the small town of Shinbone with his wife Hallie to bury an old friend, Tom Doniphon, and tells reporters the truth about how he became known as "the man who shot Liberty Valance." Years earlier, Ransom, as a diver and aspiring lawyer, had encouraged Shinbone to oppose the bandit Valance, a bandit who also enforced the will of cattle interests to block state rule over the territory. Ransom also gained the sympathy of HallieEricson, much to the anger of local loyalist Tom Doniphon, whose jealous rage was more dangerous to Ransom than that of Valance and his gang. But it turned out to be quite ironic.
