“The Army of Shadows” is a chamber epic about the French Resistance duringWorld War II. France, 1942, occupation period. Philippe Gerbier, civil engineer, is one of the leaders of the French Resistance. Reported by a traitor, he is interned in a camp. He manages to escape and joins his network in Marseille, where he has the traitor executed... This unspectacular film (don't expect Rambo or Robin Hood) shows us with severity and cruelty the everyday life of the French rebels: their loneliness, their fears, their relationships, arrests, orders and executions. ..The author Joseph Kessel and co-author and director Jean-Pierre Melville were part of this “Army of Shadows”.
