Au Hasard Balthazar offers an uncompromising look at human cruelty, suffering and injustice, seen through the eyes of a donkey over the course of his long life. The donkey at the center of the film begins his life peacefully and happily as a nameless toy of some innocent children in idyllic France, but his situation changes dramatically when he becomes the property of a young woman named Marie, who calls him Balthazar. As he grows up, he experiences tragedy and heartbreak, even Balthazar; It passes from owner to owner, who treats it in different ways, from compassionate to cruel. The donkey is obviously incapable of understanding an individual's motivations, but he nobly and admirably accepts the treatment (and role) bestowed upon him. Ultimately, Bresson uses the story as an allegorical and heartbreaking commentary on human spiritual transcendence.
