The film's plot revolves around Hanada, also known as "Killer No. 3", the thirdbest assassin in Japanese organized crime.At the height of his career, his fortunes change when he meets Misako, a mysterious woman obsessed with death who entrusts him with a particularly difficult mission. In a famous moment that illustrates the film's eccentric sensibilities, a butterfly lands inthe crosshairs of his gun just as he pulls the trigger, missing the target. This failure means the assassin becomes a target and must flee for his life from his former employers and the mysterious “Killer #1.” Although the film contains spectacular action sequences, the story unfolds not as a suspenseful thriller, but as a surreal psychosexual nightmare full of grotesque images and strange details, from Hanada's fetish for the smell of cooked rice to a dead man from Misako.
