Architect John Baxter is a moment too late to save his daughter Christine, who accidentally drowns in a stream on her English country estate. John then undertakes restoration work on Venice Cathedral so that he and his wife Laura can overcome their grief. But there he is haunted by strange visions and on the street he sees a fleeting little girl in a red coat who he believes could be Christine. Laura meets two sisters, one of whom is clairvoyant, and talks to Christine. Laura returns to England in, but John is sure to see her and her sisters traveling on a river barge.
