Of all the film versions of the famous 1881 shootout, this one probably has the highest testosterone quotient, starring Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp and Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday. He focuses on the friendship between anhonest and responsible sheriff and a consumerist and risky gambler, suggesting that their relationship is based on the contrast of characteristics. Wyatt's turbulent romance with gambler Laura Benbow and Doc's rivalry with Johnny Ringo for the affections of local KateFisher heighten the tension leading up to the final showdown. When Wyatt's brothers, lawyers from Tombstone, ask him to help level the playing field against Ike Clanton, his brothers, the McLowerys and Johnny Ringo, Doc decides to join his friend. When Wyatt arrives in town, he immediatelybecomes involved in Ike's cattle rustling, which leads to the outlaw framing him for murder.A mistake leads to Wyatt's younger brother Jimmy being murdered instead of Wyatt. The Doctor tries to convince him to take revenge, but the angry lawman is having none of it and the stage is set for a historic gunfight finale. This solid, well-directed Western is based on anexcellent script by writer Leon Uris and the charisma of its two stars and an excellent supporting cast that includes Dennis Hopper, Jack Elam, Lee Van Cleef, Earl Holliman and Kenneth Tobey.
