While working at British intelligence headquarters in Cairo in 1916, Lawrence was sent on a mission to make contact with Prince Faisal, the leader of the Arab Revolt and ally of the British against the German-backed Turks in World War I. Impressed by Lawrence's knowledge of their culture, the prince allows the young officer to join his staff, and Lawrence quickly gains the respect of the Arabs after performing extraordinary exploits. When Lawrence's genius for guerrilla warfare emerged in, he assumed the de facto role of leader of the Arab revolt, uniting the previously warring tribes into a devastatingly effective weapon.
