Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov's controversial LOLTA is a nasty satire about sexual obsession, sadomasochism and fetishism. When friendly Professor Humbert Humbert arrives in the small town of Ramsdale, New Hampshire, he is immediately attacked by his landlady Charlotte Haze and her teenage daughter Lolita. Even though Humbert becomes involved with Charlotte, it is Lolita who becomes obsessed. When Charlotte sends her daughter to summer camp (aptly namedCamp Climax), Humbert is overcome with jealousy. Finally he takes Lolita out of the camp and leaves with her alone.On the way he is harassed by Clare Quilty, who threatens to report him. But nothing can break Lolita's power over Humbert.From the opening sequence - a close-up of a man's hand (wearing a wedding ring) carefully polishing a young girl's nails - Kubrick's caustic, dark LOLITA burns with sexual energy as she follows the humiliation of an intelligent, sophisticated man in a film series carefully crafted long shots that simmer with psychosexual tension. Although there is little physical contact, Kubrick suggests this beautifully, particularly in the driving scene where Charlotte and Lolita grab Humbert'shands. But given the seriousness of the subject, Kubrick pauses long enough to include a wild slapstick scene in which Humbert and the hunterfight over the bed while Lolita sleeps peacefully on the bed and Quilty playsping pong. seemingly inexhaustible supply of balls.Stanley Kubrick's highly controversial masterpiece is a fascinating look at pedophilia and the sexual taboos that lead to obsession and murder.
