Ariane Chavasse is the daughter of a private detective who was hired by Monsieur X, a suspicious husband, to find out who his wife is dating. When she discovers a woman in the hands of millionaire playboy Frank Flannagan, she tells her predictably angry husband, who loudly announces his intention to kill the intruder as Arianna listens. She rushes to warn Flannagan of her impending death, triggering a series of afternoon meetings in which she strikes the pose of a weary lover and woman of the world. The middle-aged Roue is initially amused by Ingénue's disguise, but gradually develops aninterest in the young woman and becomes obsessed with finding her after her disappearance.After telling the story to the girl's father in the steam room, the detective agrees to help Flannagan find her. Wilder's romantic and sophisticated fairy tale, filmed in spectacular Parisian locations such as the Opéra and the elegant Château de Vitry, is almost stolen by Chevalier in his role as a doorman.
