Ngmar Bergman said The Magic Flute inspired him long before he made thisfilm adaptation of the current production of Mozart's opera. In the libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder - here not in German but in Swedish - Prince Tamino is sent by the mysterious and powerful Queen of the Night to save her daughter Pamina from the magician Sarastro, who has kidnapped her. Tamino's mission is aided by the bird hunter Papageno, the charming fool from(and arguably the play's most popular character) who wants nothing more than to find a loving wife. The director presents an abridged version of the story, enriched (with some Freudian elements of the plot), slightly modifying thepicture to give it a more modern and less politically questionable character. Bergman shows the action on stage, often zooming in to take close-ups of the actors interacting with one another, interspersed with shots of individual faces in the audience.The actors were chosen primarily for their looks and stage presence rather than their vocal abilities, although critics praised Hagegård for his great performance and he later enjoyed a brilliant musical career.
