Colonel Dax is the commander of the French Army's powerful 701st Infantry Regiment, entrenched on the Western Front during the stalemate of World War I. The year is 1916 and the Allies have been fighting the equally determined German war machine for two years. Dax, who was a criminal defense lawyer in peacetime, hopes that his regiment will be released from front-line service. The high command has other plans. Generals Broulard, commander of the corps and polite representative of the high command of the year, arrive at the magnificent and peaceful castle that serves as the headquarters of General Mireau, commander of the division.Broulard tells Mireau that his division is resting and must now launch a massive attack against an impregnable German position called Ant Hill and that the position must be taken within 48 hours.
