“Playtime” is set in ultra-modern Paris, where the most famous monuments appear only as fleeting reflections in new buildings made of glass and steel. Together with Hulot and a group of American tourists, Tati exploits the chaos that lies beneath the overly ordered surface of this new world. Jumping from one near-silent episode to the next, Tati sends his alter ego to arrange ameeting in a busy, nondescript office complex. Then he goes to an exhibition ofnew inventions, reunites with an old friend in an aquarium-like apartment, wreaks havoc at a fancy new restaurant, and almost falls in love again.
