In the second part of a series of films starring the incompetent French inspector Jacques Clouseau, the incompetent detective attempts to acquit the maid of murdering her lover, even though all evidence points to her.– Peter Sellers returns as the world's most accident-prone detective in the second film in Blake Edwards' Pink Panther series. When Maria Gambrelli, a maid of Parisian plutocrat Benjamin Ballon, is accused of killing her lover, Clouseau is put in charge of the case. The bumbling detective insists on the young beauty's innocence, much to Inspector Dreyfus' dismay, despite considerable evidence to the contrary. Even after Maria is caught red-handed near the murdered gardener's corpse (with a bloody pair ofscissors, in, to be exact), Clouseau still believes in her innocence and repeatedlyreleases her from prison.When the body of Dudu, the Ballon's former servant, is found, everything points to Maria's involvement, even if in the eyes of the clever Clouseau this is obviously not the case. Clouseau investigates every aspect of the case in detail (even if it requiressurveillance of a nudist colony) in order to catch the real murderer. Or maybe it was always Maria?This fast-paced farce is arguably the best film in the long-running series and a prime example of Sellers, whose deadpan, perfectly timed verbal manipulations and virtuoso displays of physical ineptitude constitute comic genius. As always, the catchy soundtrack by Henry Mancini is an integralpart of the film.
