When Widow Tweed takes in a fox cub whose mother was killed by hunters, she names him Death and raises him. Around the same time he greets Death,his neighbor Amos Slade brings home a puppy named Copper. One day, Copper and Tod meet in the forest and immediately become best friends. As fall arrives and Amos hesitantly takes Copper on a winter hunting trip, Tod tries to convince his friends Big Mama, Dinky and Boomer that even if Copper returns as a trained hunting dog, they will always remain best friends. Big Mama tells Tod that a fox and a dog are natural enemies and that, surprisingly, you are a fox.
