Cary Scott is a wealthy widow who gradually returns to a social life among her mostly boring country club colleagues. His only apparent joy in life is weekend visits from his college-age children. Cary then meets a handsome young man, Ron, who owns a small landscaping business. Ron is a devotee of Henry David Thoreau's Walden and "hears a different drummer" while enjoying a nature-oriented life; He is consciously uninterested in the chatty opinions of others. Their relationship leads to clashes and tension between Cary, his children and the people at the country club.
