The couples Bob and Carol Sanders and Ted and Alice Henderson are best friends. After attending a weekend self-discovery session (Bob plans to make a documentary about it), Bob and Carol feel enlightened again and wish their friends Ted and Alice do the same. “Feeling” is the right word because they want people to feel now, not think. Each of the quartet explores their feelings and certainly their thoughts about their individual relationships with one another and the subject of sex, as Bob admits to Carol that he has had a meaningless sexual affair, which Carol later mentions to Ted and Alice. After crossing sexual boundaries with others, the four decide that there is one final boundary that they must truly cross to test their new state of enlightenment.
