In the small New England town of Arkham, residents discover that Joseph Curwen has kidnapped a local girl and is preparing to use her in blasphemous rituals to cross humans with the Old Gods, thus allowing the gods to takecontrol of the Earth to take over. Curwen is dragged out and burned alive. He dies cursing the locals and saying he will return to haunt their children's children. 110 years later, Curwen descendant Charles Dexter Ward and his wife Ann arrive in Arkham into inherit the Curwen estate, but are greeted coldly by the locals. In the mansion, the spirit of the weak Ward is possessed by the spirit of Curwen, which emanates from the portrait above the cloak.With the help of Ward, Curwen sets out once again on his blasphemous mission and exacts revenge on the descendants of those who burned him.
